The internet is such an important aspect of our lives that some consider it a human right! Given how integral the world wide web is today as compared to what it was nearly a decade ago, its various social media platforms have also grown as important ways to communicate, socialize and build networks. And among them all, Facebook is the top dog with over 2.01 billion active monthly users all around the world!
If you’re a Facebook fanatic, we’ve compiled this nifty list of tips and tricks you can use to enhance your daily Facebooking!
Hack-proofing
We’ve all heard or known of people who had their accounts hacked one way or another, leading to some particularly distressing situations. To prevent this from happening, Facebook has set up several ways that let you access your account through alternative means in case you lose your password or someone has changed it. Sadly, most people who do get hacked and have to resort to making a new account usually don’t take advantage of Facebook’s various privacy and accounts settings. Keep your account safe by firstly setting your privacy settings to the max: activate phone notifications to allow you to log in or a two-step authentication. Secondly, don’t click on random links (especially from strangers) and avoid downloading anything from fishy sources. Lastly, regularly check your activity log for any unauthorized access and enable email/phone notifications if someone has logged in to your account from another location or device.
Retrieve Deleted Facebook Messages, Photos and Videos
Accidentally deleted that screenshot worthy message or an address you needed to get to in the morning? No worries. Simply go to “Settings” and then “General Settings”. Click on “download a copy of your Facebook data” at the bottom of the list. This lets you archives all posts, messages, photos and videos, and even lets you download them as a .html that you can open in any browser offline. So there you go, you got it back. Bet you didn’t know this, did you? Well now you do!
Identifying Fake Profiles
Some fake profiles spell out fake in the most obvious ways that you don’t even need to double check – after all, Leonardo DiCaprio probably won’t send you a friend request (emphasis on probably). But some are hard to pinpoint and it’s important for you to know who you’re adding. Most of the time, if you see a profile picture with random sceneries or a celebrity, it should immediately raise a couple of red flags. Moreover, most bots and fake accounts have January 1st as their birthday (call it sloppy workmanship), plenty of Facebook friends but hardly anything in their “About” section. If you spot these tell-tale signs, then hit that “Ignore” or “Block” immediately.
Trusted Contacts
This is where all your best friends come into play – friends you can trust will have your back. And. In case something happens to you or even if you simply forget your password, add up to 5 trusted contacts to help retrieve your password or gain access to your account after a set amount of inactivity. To get this done, just go to “Settings”, and then “Security and Login” and select 3 to 5 friends that you know are trusted contacts, and they’ll be notified of this setting.
Activate Facebook Mobile
So you’re hanging out with your friends and want to update your status to make your Facebook friends jelly. Ah! But you don’t have access to Facebook! No worries, you’re covered. Just simply activate Facebook Texts in your settings and then you can send an SMS to 32665 (FBOOK) to send an update and get notifications without using data (although your standard messaging rates do apply). You can even choose what kind of notifications you want to receive in your Facebook Settings, including when you want to receive them.
And that’s a wrap, folks! Here’s to a friendlier, easier and better Facebook experience at a click of a mouse and a few taps of your fingers.
